If you grew up with parents who were emotionally distant or disconnected, your depression may really be loneliness or longing to be seen, understood, and cherished. If you were considered too sensitive or needy, you might have believed there was something wrong with you. You might be critical of yourself in the hope that if you conform, you will finally feel a sense of belonging.
You can't change what happened before. But you can learn to give yourself deep, unconditional understanding, love and care. When you have the emotional safety of your own care and protection, it becomes easier to choose friendships and relationships that are truly supportive.
