Eco-Anxiety: Feeling safe in a changing world
"You helped me find compassion for myself during a time in history that humans have never seen before. You also helped me see that I was making my anxiety worse by overdosing on news. I know how to tend to myself now - no matter what craziness is going on out there. I focus on the things I can control, and I make my corner of the world as safe and comfortable as I can."
It really is a crazy time. You’re not imagining it. If you are at all aware, you know that climate change is real. Here in the Bay Area, drought and wildfires are more devastating than ever. Last year, the fires were right here in Pleasant Hill, Martinez, Walnut Creek and Lafayette.
The political landscape is more divisive and contentious than ever. People feel isolated and alone, and social media seems to fuel the worst in us - gossip and self-comparison, rather than real connection.
To make things worse, we are seeing new viral strains like the COVID-19 coronavirus, which is scary on so many levels (and, along with our terrible traffic, why I offer
phone sessions).
It is more important than ever to develop a relationship of trust and love inside of yourself. The buzzwords, self-care and self-compassion, are floating in the collective consciousness because we all need them. But very few of us really know what they mean or how to put them into practice.
My superpower is teaching clients how to develop a mindset of deep inner love through regular, daily acts of kindness, support, encouragement, understanding, forgiveness, and cherishing toward themselves.
In a world that feels scary, we can each create a microcosm of tenderness and gentleness. If enough of us do just that, we may indeed create the change we long for on a bigger scale.
